The Department of Economic Development provides the structure to formulate policy for the industrial and commercial districts in the Township of Union. The goal of the department is to promote and revitalize the Township of Union by attracting and retaining industrial and commercial investment while increasing Union’s economic base and creating job expansion.

Transportation is one of the most critical keys to the future of economic development in Union. The department is the lead agency in the Union Station project that has brought passenger rail service to Union in the spring of 2003. The station and surrounding area has been designated a redevelopment zone in an effort to acquire “Transit Village” status from the State of New Jersey.  At present, construction of forty-nine up-scale townhouses is underway.  In the future, a 120 room corporate suite hotel will rise next to the station.

The Department of Economic Development is also the department that coordinates federal and state aid applications for the township. These applications may be in the form of grants for environmental cleanups, land improvements and the purchase of equipment.

The Office of Public Information is also within the duties of the department.
