West Nile Virus
West Nile Virus or WNV continues to be a seasonal problem in our area as its mode of transmission to humans is from infected birds which are bitten by mosquitoes that in turn carry the infection to humans and other animals. The infection can take between 3 to 14 days after a mosquito bite to cause symptoms of WNV to develop. These symptoms maybe mild or serious but in 80% of those infected show no symptoms at all. The majority of those who develops illness will have a mild case with fever, headache, body aches, nausea, vomiting, rashes, and this may last for a few days to several weeks. One in about 150 people infected will develop serious illness which can last for several weeks and neurological effects may be permanent.
To avoid WNV infection you need to prevent mosquito bites, be sure to follow these instructions:
§ When you are outdoors, use insect repellent containing an EPA-registered active ingredient. Follow the directions on the package.
§ Many mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn. Be sure to use insect repellent and wear long sleeve shirts and pants at these times or consider staying indoors during these hours.
§ Make sure you have good screens on your windows and doors to keep mosquitoes out.
§ Get rid of mosquito breeding sites by emptying standing water from flower pots, buckets, and barrels. Change the water in pet dishes and replace the water in bird baths weekly. Drill holes in tire swings so water drains out. Keep children’s wading pools empty and on their sides when they aren’t being used.
§ Contact the Union County Mosquito Commission at 908-654-9834 if there are natural breeding areas or swarms of mosquitoes in your area.
