Elected Officials  ____________________________

TOWNSHIP COMMITTEE:
Clifton People Jr., Deputy Mayor
Oversees: PUBLIC WORKS, BLDG AND GROUNDS, LIGHTING, REFUSE

Clifton People, Jr., is no stranger to politics and community activism. After serving his community for 21 years as a County Committeeman, Mr. People was elected to the Township Committee and began a three-year term as a township committeeman on January 1, 2005.

Over the past two decades, Clifton People’s community involvement included serving on the Community Development Advisory Board, where he served as chairman for one-year, the Recreational Advisory Committee, the Community Relations Committee and the Economic Development Committee.

Currently, Mr. People is serving his second five-year term on the Union County Utility Authority, where he holds the office of treasurer and is the chairman of the Solid Waste Committee, respectively.  In addition, he has held the office of 1st Vice President of the Democratic Club of Union for three consecutive years.

Committeeman People holds an associate degree in sociology and a B.A. in psychology from Rutgers University.  His insight to the human condition is of great benefit in working to improve the quality of life for the people he was elected to serve.

About the Committee: Union operates under a "Township" form of government, consisting of five members of a Township Committee, elected at-large for staggered three-year terms. Elections are held annually. The Township Committee members also act as liaisons to the various departments of the municipal government. The Township Committee elects from its members the mayor for a one-year term. The Mayor, in addition to voting as a member of the Township Committee, presides over the meetings of the committee and carries out ceremonial duties.
