Pedestrian Safety and Jaywalking
The Township of Union
Police Department, in an attempt to reduce serious
accidents involving pedestrians, wants to advise the
public of the importance of obeying all traffic
signs and safety rules when traveling by foot.
Warm weather is here,
school will soon be out, and there will be an
increase in pedestrian traffic within the township.
Citizens should be aware that jaywalking is not only
a dangerous practice that could result in serious
injury or death, but it is also against the law.
Union’s Chief of
Police, Thomas Kraemer, feels no aspect of public
safety should be overlooked.
“Jaywalking is a
problem and one that this department takes very
seriously,” said Kraemer. “Our officers are
directed to enforce all violations including
jaywalking. Every year this practice contributes to
serious injuries and fatalities which can be reduced
if people would just obey the simples rules of
pedestrian safety, such as using crosswalks, traffic
lights, and refraining from crossing mid block,”
added the Chief.
The
Chief also reminds drivers to be especially cautious
when making right turns on red. Drivers should make
an extra effort to make sure that intersections are
free from pedestrians before proceeding.
Citizens are reminded that jaywalking summonses
carry a fine of $55 or more plus court costs.
