The Township of
Union Police Department wants members of the public to be
aware of some simple steps that can be taken to remain safe
whether in your vehicle or simply out for a walk. Security
steps should be taken in regard to cell phones Global
Positioning System Displays and other high end technology
items.
“A good
principle to remember is ‘out of sight, out of mind’”,
states Union’s Chief of Police, Thomas Kraemer. “These
small high end items are very desirable, and some
individuals will not think twice about making these items
the focus of a robbery or theft,” reminded the Chief.
Individuals
should remain aware of their surroundings at all times.
Walk in areas that you are familiar with, and go with a
friend if possible. Park your car only in well lit areas.
Carry a minimum of items. Close purses, backpacks, and
briefcases, or secure these items in your car trunk out of
sight. Always keep your attention on your surroundings and
people in the area. Move with a demeanor that is confident
and secure. A person who looks frightened or confused is
more likely to become a target. Have keys handy, so that
you avoid fumbling for these items in a purse or bag. These
activities take your attention away from your surroundings
and may create an opportunity for a thief. Avoid using cell
phones while walking, which can remove your attention from
persons and things around you. Keep phones concealed,
whether they are on your person or in a motor vehicle.
Avoid storing information in your phone such as account
numbers and other data that should be kept confidential.
Before you leave
your vehicle, remove all items of value from view,
especially items like cell phones or Global Positioning
System Displays. Always remember to lock your car.
In order for a
crime to occur, there needs to be an opportunity. Don’t
make your cell phone or other valuable items that
opportunity.
