NOTICE OF VIOLATION

A notice of violation (NOV) is a formal citation that informs a person or business that a municipal ordinance or code has been violated. A NOV is issued when a violation is documented by an inspector.

The purpose of a NOV is to initiate corrective action that will stop the violation, before a summons is issued. The NOV will state a period of compliance (normally 24 hours), to enable the party to correct the violation.

When a NOV is left at a residence or business, the violation will be marked, with a brief description of corrective action needed.

In most cases, violations (NOV’S) can be resolved without the need to issue a summons. If you are in doubt as to how to resolve a violation, please contact the Township of Union Department of Public Works at (908) 686-1922.

The property owner will be notified by the court for the trial date and the judge may impose additional fines to the court costs. Serious or repeated violations that show blatant disregard for the law and for public health may lead to criminal prosecution.
