Housing Rehabilitation Program

 • WHO NEEDS IT?
Does the home that you own and live in need extensive repair work that you cannot afford? Do you need to replace or fix your heating, electrical or plumbing systems? Do you have a badly leaking roof or other structural problem?

 • WHAT CAN BE DONE?
If you are the owner-occupant of a one-family property, you may get your property brought up to standard, In cooperation with the Township of Union, the Office of Community Development will help you plan and carry out these repairs.

 • DO I QUALIFY?
The program is available to home owners whose income falls within the annual guidelines as set by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and New Jersey Council on Affordable Housing.

 • HOW DO THE FINANCES WORK?
Before the construction begins, you will sign loan agreements. This loan will be interest free and you will not have to make any monthly payments. The loan will be paid when you sell or transfer the ownership of your home.

 • HOW CAN YOU APPLY?
1. Obtain additional information about the program by contacting Union Township Office of Community Development which administers the Housing Rehabilitation Program at (908) 810-7071
2. Fill out the Pre-Application application and submit the form. The Community Development Office staff will contact you to set up an appointment.
3. Meet with the rehabilitation program staff to discuss the program and fill out initial application forms.
4. Arrange for property visit and inspection with rehabilitation program inspector. After the property visit, the program staff will prepare a work write-up and cost estimate.
5. If you are willing to meet rehabilitation guidelines, processing of financial and legal documentation will be implemented.
6. Staff will prepare and submit cost estimates and all necessary applications on behalf of each applicant.
