Committeeman Florio has served on the Township Committee since 1997. During this time he has served 4 terms as Mayor. A 46-year resident of Union, Joe has a long history of service to his community including as a member of the Planning Board, Board of Adjustment and co-chairman of the Study Commission for the Board of Education Adult Advisory Committee.
Since being first elected to the Township Committee in 1997, Joe's committee assignments have included Commissioner of Police, Fire, DPW, Recreation and Senior Activities.
A recipient of the 2003 UNICO Humanitarian Award, Joe is also a member of the Knight's of Columbus and the Columbian Italian American Club of Union. A strong advocate of youth recreation programs, Joe was involved for 10 years in the Union Little League and was one of the original founders of the current recreational basketball program. Joe was instrumental on getting lights for our fields serving the greater demand of our youth and adults.
As a member of the Township Committee, Mr. Florio is proud of his leadership in the funding and opening of the senior center, the ground breaking for the new train station and, as a strong supporter of public safety, Mr. Florio lead in getting the most up to date radio equipment for our police and fire vehicles and state-of-the-art infrared cameras for our fire department.
As an elected official from Union, Joe is currently serving on the Essex/Union Joint Meeting Board. This Board oversees the operations of the waste water treatment plant that services 11 communities in Essex and Union Counties.During his tenure as Mayor in 2011 and 2012 he was a leader in forming the Mayors council to get a long term regional solution to deal with flooding along the Rahway River. He also led the effort working with the DEP to provide short term flood relief to flood prone areas in the township.
Joe retired from UPS where he was a Senior Director of Information Technology. There he was responsible for leading the effort in the development of many of technology systems that supported their business.
