Clifton People, Jr. is no stranger to politics and community activism. After serving his community for more than 24 years as a county Committeeman, Mr. People became the first African American Mayor in the Township’s history while completing his third term on the Township Committee.
Over the past two decades, Mr. People’s community involvement has included serving on the Community Development Advisory Board, where he previously served as Chairman. He also served on the Recreational Advisory Committee, Community Relations Committee, the Economic Development Committee and the Senior Center Advisory Committee.
As a Township Committeeman, Mr. People was appointed to serve as Commissioner for the following departments respectively: Department of Public Works, Police, Fire, Recreations and Senior Citizens.
Currently, Mr. People is serving his third, five-year term on the Union County Utility Authority, where he holds the office of treasurer and is Chairman of the Solid Waste Committee. In addition, he has held the office of 1st Vice President of the Democratic Club of Union for four years.
Committeeman People is a Vietnam Veteran that holds an Associate’s Degree in Sociology and a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology from Rutgers University. His insight to the human condition is of great benefit in working to improve the quality of life for the people he has been elected to serve.
